Arguably, the quarterback is the heart of the team and plays one of the biggest roles on a football team. Having a solid quarterback is what makes a good team great and what can keep a team’s playoff hopes alive. However, having an inconsistent or worse, a bad quarterback spells doom for the whole team.
While some NFL teams have good quarterbacks, there are more than a few who either don’t have a consistent quarterback or are constantly making up excuses for the QB they have. Here are 4 teams that could benefit from the addition of a new quarterback.
Houston Texans: The Texans have one of the most loaded defensive lines in the NFL and JJ Watt is no doubt one of the most popular NFL players. Where the Texans really lack depth is their quarterback position. After signing Brian Hoyer and naming him their starter, it looked like their problem was solved but their problem truly started after Hoyer made some bad mistakes.
The Texans handed the reins to Ryan Mallett who was almost as bad as Hoyer but managed to get one more touchdown than Hoyer. The Texans could be a quality team and now would be their perfect chance with the Colts dying slowly. Unfortunately if the Texans keep flip-flopping QBs, nothing will change and the Texans will be doomed to remain out of the playoffs, leaving the number one player in the NFL looking out of place.
Philadelphia Eagles: Chip Kelly’s idea to completely demolish the Eagles team and build it back up was a good idea, in theory, but now it’s looking idiotic. QB Sam Bradford has to be the biggest disappointment of them, though, well maybe Demarco Murray could take that title away from him. Bradford’s trade from the Rams to the Eagles for Nick Foles seemed to be a good idea, but Bradford’s sloppy performance is what’s really causing all of the issues for him and the offense.
Then, of course, there’s the fear that Kelly must have is whether Bradford can stay healthy the entire season. With a 0-2 start and a game against the Jets approaching fast, Bradford looks like he was not worth the trade. At least not yet.
Chicago Bears: The Bears seem to be the butt of every joke, especially Jay Cutler who receives a ton of hate from Bears fans and non-Bears fans alike. Cutler’s inconsistency and general bad decision making is what causes a lot of the hatred. In his career, Cutler has 185 touchdowns to 132 interceptions and 75 fumbles which illustrate the earlier point and shows where Cutler’s weaknesses are.
A new quarterback would be exactly what the Bears need and give a dying and miserable franchise the chance to get a makeover and get back to their glory days. The closing of the Jay Culter era would be great for everyone involved.
Washington Redskins: The best is obviously saved for last! The Washington Redskins thought they had found their franchise QB in RG3 and at first, he looked like the real deal. Then reality seemed to set in for everyone and he started making bad decisions and could not stay healthy. His 40 touchdowns to 23 interceptions along with 32 fumbles had to be part of the reason why he was demoted.
Then there’s Kirk Cousins who was meant to be Griffin’s back-up, now turned starter for the 2015 season. Cousins was a back-up for a reason and as a starter this year, he has completed 74 of 107 passes, thrown three touchdowns and four interceptions along with one fumble. The only glimmer of hope was Cousin’s leading the Skins to a win over the Rams. Last but not least is Colt McCoy who played in five games for the Redskins and threw four touchdowns to three interceptions. No matter how you look at it, the Redskins and their franchise would benefit from a new quarterback regardless of how much Gruden tries to defend Cousins. The Redskins will just be better off, starting with a clean slate.
