The New York Rangers announced on Thursday that they have signed free agent left winger Daniel Paille. Paille agreed to terms on a two-way contract worth $575,000 in the NHL and $100,000 in the AHL.
Paille was drafted by the Buffalo Sabres in the 2002 NHL Draft and played for the Boston Bruins last season. Paille recorded six goals and 13 points in 71 games with the Bruins last season, and has 85 goals and 172 points in 570 regular season games with the Sabres and Bruins. The 31-year-old also helped the Bruins win the Stanley Cup in 2011, and reach the Stanley Cup Finals again in 2013.
The Rangers are hoping that Paille is going to add new edge to the penalty kill, which has dropped to 25th in the league. The penalty kill has only been worsening, especially since waiving forward Jarrett Stoll in December. An improved penalty kill will help the Rangers in their play and help them grab more wins if they can prevent their opponents from scoring on their power plays.
Paille is excited to be joining the Blueshirts in New York, and to be a part of the NHL again. He will travel with the team to their game in North Carolina, but coach Alain Vigneault said it is unclear whether or not he will take the lineup on Friday against the Hurricanes.
