Well, this certainly won’t help his approval rating. While the government is in shambles because of the shutdown, President Obama decided this would be an ideal time to give his opinion on the Washington Redskins name. Many have called for owner Dan Snyder to change it because it is considered insulting to Native Americans. Snyder has vehemently said that as long as he is the owner, he will not change the name.
Obama said in an interview, that he “would consider changing” it if it offends a sizable amount of people. He went on further to say, “I don’t know whether our attachment to a particular name should override the real legitimate concerns that people have about these things.” NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has also stated that the NFL should take an interest in people who oppose the name. Many who oppose the name plan to protest in Washington when the NFL has fall meetings on Monday. However, if the Redskins have to change their name shouldn’t the Cleveland Indians, Atlanta Braves, and Kansas City Chiefs also have to change their names? Back to Obama, please do not worry about sports and instead focus on getting our government up and running again!
