Baseball is back! While not every team has played yet, there have already been an abundance of big moments. It is great to see America’s past time back on our televisions!
In what started as a very special moment for Vlad Guerrero turned into a very scary moment for Angels’ hitting coach Don Baylor. Guerrero was honored to throw out the ceremonial first pitch at the Los Angeles Angels game and Baylor was set to catch. Unfortunately, when Baylor was getting ready to catch the ball, he rolled his leg and had to be carted off the field. It was later revealed he suffered a broken right femur and will require surgery.
It was a horrible start to the Angels’ season. Luckily, Mike Trout did everything he could to make fans forget about it. In his first at-bat since signing his $144.5 million extension, Trout homered off Mariners’ ace Felix Hernandez. The Angels ended up losing 10-3. The game also featured the debut of Robinson Cano in a Mariners jersey. In his debut, Cano had two hits including a double.
Ryan Braun made his return to baseball after being suspended for the last 65 games of last season. He was publicly shunned by baseball fans after lying about using performance enhancing drugs and dragging an innocent sample collector down to save himself. However, in front of his home crowd, Braun received a standing ovation during his first appearance at the plate. Hard to believe this is the same guy who lied in this exact stadium just a year ago. I cannot imagine Alex Rodriguez will receive the same warm welcome in New York.
St. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Adam Wainwright reached a personal milestone yesterday when he won his 100th game. Wainwright threw a shut out against division rival Cincinnati and the Cardinals won 1-0. Of course, the one run coming from a Yadier Molina home run in the seventh.
