Marcus Mariota is the newest member of the Heisman winner club. Oregon’s quarterback was presented the award tonight, becoming the first Oregon player to ever win the prestigious award. The award is the fourth the quarterback has won this weekend. He received the Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award, the Maxwell Award, and the Walter Camp Player of the Year Award.
Mariota had one of the best seasons in college football history. He led the Ducks to an 11-2 record and a spot in the new BCS playoff setup. He threw for 3,783 yards and 38 touchdowns; only throwing for two interceptions the entire season. While his throwing accuracy would be enough to win the Heisman, Mariota is the latest dual threat quarterback. He rushed for fourteen touchdowns and was second on his team in rushing yards. Mariota beat out Wisconsin running back Melvin Gordon and Alabama wide receiver Amari Cooper for the Heisman trophy.
