The first expert has testified in the Reeva Steenkamp murder trial and already her accused murderer, Blade Runner Oscar Pistorius, has broken down. Pistorius has been an emotional wreck throughout the trial which started about a week ago, but pathologist Gery Saayman’s proved to be far worse.
Pistorius became physically ill, even vomiting multiple times, when he listened to Saayman recount the bullet wounds on Steenkamp’s body. Saayman’s testimony was deemed too graphic by presiding judge Thokozile Masipa and he immediately blacked out the broadcast and stopped any live feed.
Neighbors testified last week that they heard Steenkamp screaming before her life ended. One neighbor who ran over to the house after hearing loud bangs said Pistorius immediately turned to him and said, “I shot her, I thought she was a burglar and I shot her”. The defense has tried to convey that the neighbors may have actually heard Pistorius screaming after he realized he shot his girlfriend. Judge Masipa alone will decide this case as South Africa does not have jury trials.
