For the first time in NFL history, this year’s draft was all done in a virtual setup. As most of the country is still on lockdown due to COVID-19, the draft was another huge event that had to find its way around the problem. While the draft proceeded smoother than expected, it was the Green Bay Packers who created quite a stir in the first round drafting quarterback Jordan Love.
Last night the Green Bay Packers moved up in the first round. They traded with the Miami Dolphins from the 30th pick to 26. With that, the Packers chose Jordan Love, a quarterback from Utah State. The pick for a skill position player was definitely not one that fans and/or media had for Packers first round.
After last season going 13-3, Green Bay came within one win of going to Super Bowl LIV. Many believed that the first-round pick should have gone towards finding help for Aaron Rodgers offensively.
With new head coach Matt LaFleur and a defensive line moving in the right direction, it was the offense that needed more bodies. When Davante Adams had to go on the injury report for a couple of weeks the team was exposed. Rodgers had to put his faith into his young lineup. Including wide receiver Allen Lazard who was put on the active roster only earlier that season.
For that reason, many believed it was the Packers year to use the first-round pick in creating the full package. But despite the present, last night the Packers looked as they are preparing more for its future.
ESPN’s First Take commentator and huge Aaron Rodgers fan, Stephen A. Smith took to Twitter.
While others compared this pick’s similarities to when Aaron Rodgers was drafted during the Brett Favre era.
In a recent interview, Rodgers made the comment on how it would be cool to pick a skill position player in the first round. It hasn’t been done in 15 years. Stating if it did happen, he would find a way to get the draftees’ phone number to reach out and congratulate the rookie on the same night. However, since the pick, communications between Love and Rodgers has not been confirmed, nor has communication between Rodgers and the Packers organization.
For rounds two and three of the 2020 NFL Draft, the start time will be at 7 pm (ET) Friday, April 24th. Airing on NFL Network, ABC, ESPN, ESPN2, and ESPN Deportes.
[…] Jordan Love is really fascinating to me because Aaron Rodgers was the same age when he was drafted as Jordan Love is now. Aaron Rodgers is the same age as Brett Favre was when Aaron was drafted. There’s definitely some interesting karmic overlap I guess you could say there. […]
