While teams like the New England Patriots and Denver Broncos have been on spending sprees this offseason, one team that has been very, very quiet is the Carolina Panthers. First they released their star player Steve Smith, who has since been picked up by the Baltimore Ravens. Their next two best receivers, Ted Ginn Jr. and Domenik Hixon have also both found new homes else where leaving Carolina without any number one receivers. A disturbing stat about the six current receivers on the Panthers rosters is they have a combined five catches.
As if that did not have fans worried, it was announced today that quarterback Cam Newton will undergo surgery tomorrow on his ankle. This has bothered him since the end of the season. Why he chose to address it now remains a mystery. However, he will likely miss OTAs with receivers who will likely not have a lot of experience. It does not appear that the Panthers are too worried as they have not really made much of an effort to get receivers. Newton is coming off his best season, but now he will be without veteran Steve Smith.
