The Pittsburgh Penguins have had a rollercoaster of a year and one of the biggest storylines this season has been the return of right winger, Pascal Dupuis. Even fans who didn’t like the  Penguins knew about Dupuis especially since he was off for almost all of last season and it was unclear if he would return to the ice, which he did this year. However, due to his medicial condition, Dupuis has decided to officially retire from the NHL after already missing multiple games this season.

For those who do not know, Dupuis was checked on the ice in October of 2014 and laid on the ice for several minutes before getting taken off. Dupuis would sit out for a few days before hitting the ice again only to be sidelined a month later. Dupuis was first diagnosed with a blood clot in his leg that made its way to his lung which caused him to miss the remainder of the 2014-15 season.

Due to the amount of mediciation that Dupuis was on, he was forbidden from skating until the beginning of this season. He published a post on Players Tribune in August to discuss his return to the ice this season.

He has appeared in 18 games this season, but with his lingering medical issues that have caused him to leave two games, he has decided to retire. Dupuis released a statement today on the Penguins official website, “It was very difficult for me to make this decision to have to step away from the game…My wife and four children have always been my first priority, and playing with my condition has become a constant worry for all of us. I want to thank my teammates and the Penguins organization for their unwavering support during this difficult time.”

Best of luck to Pascal Dupuis in whatever he chooses to do next!
