The Kansas City Chiefs’ hopes of becoming just the eighth team to repeat as Super Bowl champions have looked possible due to the ridiculous play of QB Patrick Mahomes. Patrick Mahomes remains the odds-on favorite to win the MVP and is arguably the greatest player currently in the National Football League. Mahomes is coming off his worst performance, but that shouldn’t take away from his brilliance all season.
Against an overperforming Dolphins team, Mahomes threw three interceptions. Kansas City escaped with the win, showing the resiliency of Kansas City as a team. This shouldn’t surprise many. The supporting cast around Mahomes including tight end Travis Kelce, wide receiver Tyreek Hill, and running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire completes the NFL’s most unstoppable offense.
The only player comparable to Mahomes this season is Aaron Rodgers. The Packers QB has shown that despite his team drafting a quarterback, he’s not ready to hang it up. Rodgers is having one of the best seasons of his career which says a lot considering he’s been a top-five quarterback for the past twelve seasons.
Currently, Mahomes leads the league in passing yards by a large margin that is likely uncatchable at this point. He is currently 447 yards ahead of number two on the list, Deshaun Watson. Rodgers has thrown more TDs at this current point in the season, 39 compared to 33. He has thrown four interceptions while Mahomes has thrown five; both incredible stats for the number of times both quarterbacks throw per game.
The next three weeks will determine the winner of the race. Both QBs are leading their teams to the playoffs. Kansas City could finish having only lost one game while the Packers are looking at the top seed in the NFC playoffs. Green Bay will be cheering for Mahomes to be great because Kansas City is facing the 10-3 Saints. The Packers and Saints are tied and battling for the top seed.
Mahomes can bounce back in a primetime game against a playoff team favorite and show why he deserves to be named MVP. Drew Brees is looking to return this week making this game a potential Super Bowl 55 matchup. Kansas City faces the Saints, Falcons, and Chargers to finish the season while the Packers will face the Panthers, Titans, and Bears.
