Team USA suffered a devastating loss when Pacers star Paul George suffered a freak injury that let everyone feeling sick. If you have not seen the video of the injury, consider yourself lucky. It was one of the worst sports injuries I have ever seen and out of respect for George and his family, the video will not be posted on this site.
The injury was suffered when George tried to block a layup by James Harden and his foot landed awkwardly against the stanchion. The entire team was visibly shaken and the scrimmage was immediately called off. Cavaliers point guard Kyrie Irving was said to be crying on his father’s shoulder after witnessing the injury.
George’s leg was immediately put into an air cast and taken to a Las Vegas hospital. He underwent surgery on his broken right leg and is said to be resting comfortably now. He tweeted to all of his fans thanking them for their well wishes.
The budding superstar is expected to miss all of the upcoming NBA season. Pacers president of basketball operations Larry Bird issued the following statement when he heard about the news to the team’s star player,
“We are hopeful at some point next week Paul will return to Indianapolis to continue his recovery. ‘ There is no question about the impact on our team but our goal is to be as strong-willed and determined as Paul will be in coming back. Our franchise has had setbacks in its history but has demonstrated the abilities to recover. Paul will provide the example of that off the court and it is up to the rest of us to provide that example on the court. Any discussion regarding the future of our team would be inappropriate at this time. Our focus is solely on Paul and doing whatever we can to help.”
Now that this has happened, it makes sense why players have decided to not participate in the FIBA World Cup. However, this is the first time an injury like this has ever happened to a Team USA participant and was such a freak accident that it could have happened anywhere at anytime. Athletes cannot live in a bubble during the offseason. Just glad to hear George is doing well and the surgery was a success!
