The Pittsburgh Penguins have announced defenseman Kris Letang suffered a stroke last week. He is said to be doing well, but will need at least six weeks of recovery time. After that time period he will be reevaluated by doctors.
General manager Ray Shero revealed that Letang was experiencing dizziness when he went to the doctor for a battery of tests. Tests revealed that he had a small hole in the wall of his heart and now doctors are wondering if that is what caused the stroke. The condition is said to be treatable and will likely not end his career.
Letang commented on his health condition saying, I hope that by making my condition public at this time, I can help other people by encouraging them to seek medical help if they experience some of the symptoms associated with a stroke — regardless of their age or general health. It obviously was a shock to get the news, but I’m optimistic that I can overcome this and get back on the ice.”
It is great to hear that he is doing well, but it is still a very scary situation. Currently, players not in the Olympics are resting and at this time Letang announced he will spending his time off with family. We are all hoping to see him back on the ice as soon as possible!
