The Penn State Nittany Lions will take on the 4th-ranked Michigan Wolverines at Michigan Stadium and the odds are definitely in Michigan’s favor. With a 2-1 record, Penn State has the disadvantage here and it looks like the win will go to Michigan but let’s break it down even further.
Penn State has one of the best running backs in the country right now. Saquon Barkley rushed for 68 yards last game and one touchdown which wasn’t much to call home about. However, if he can get past Michigan’s defense, Barkley could have a stellar game. This is one of those games where Barkley really has to prove that he can play with the big boys and that he isn’t all hype.
If Barkley can’t generate much, then the Lions have to go with passing plays. The good thing is Michigan hasn’t been great at breaking up passes. If Trace McSorley can march his team down the field and make some big plays, then Penn State might have a chance. The only problem there is Michigan will be getting back some of their defensive players who add some depth and beef up a defense that allowed three passing touchdowns last game.
In their game against Colorado last week, the Wolverines started off slow but eventually gained momentum and were able to bring home a win. If Wilton Speight’s struggles from the last game keep up, then Penn State has a good chance of picking him off. The bottom line for Michigan is not to allow Penn State to make big plays, especially with Barkley although Michigan has been great at stopping the run. The bottom line for Penn State is to make plays on defense, especially turnovers, and not let Michigan gain momentum to overtake them.
Sorry Penn State fans, but I give this week’s game to Michigan.
