Through a mutual agreement, Adrian Peterson and the Minnesota Vikings will restructure the remaining three years of the running back’s contract.

The team released a statement earlier today:

“This agreement is a win for both Adrian and the Vikings and is a positive step toward Adrian finishing his career as a Minnesota Viking,” said Vikings General Manager Rick Spielman. “As we have consistently said, Adrian is a valuable part of the Vikings organization and we look forward to his return to the field.”

“I appreciate the Vikings for working together on this restructured contract, which provides additional security for me but also allows opportunities for me to further prove my value to the team and within the NFL,” said Peterson. “It was important for me to continue my career in Minnesota, and I cannot wait to get on the field in front of Vikings fans again.”

While the contract details will not be disclosed per team policy, NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reports that Peterson will be guaranteed his 2015 salary of $12.75 million (while this was his base salary for the year prior to the renegotiation, the money was not guaranteed). The deal allegedly calls for a lower 2016 base salary with the opportunity to earn it back through incentives and an injury guarantee.

The deal can be viewed as a win-win for both parties, Peterson gains the financial security he’s been pushing for since he was reinstated and the Vikings may have very well solidified their shot at being a playoff contender for the next few seasons.
