Michael Phelps now hold the record for most medals. He is once again beloved by Americans and his scandal has all been forgotten about. What scandal am I referring to? In 2009, Michael Phelps was caught on video smoking what appears to be marijuana out of a bong. Yeah, now that became an American legend, it has been swept under the rug and he is America’s golden child again. So is he proof that celebrities and sports figures can rise above their soiled past? It certainly seems that way. Phelps has been extremely low key since that incident until the London Olympics in which everyone was more interested in how many medals he was going to win this year. So the way to have your past forever forgotten, lay low until a major positive event. Even though he really did not do anything that horrific. Sure, smoking marijuana is illegal and yes it makes him look like a bad role model, but he is a young athlete. He is not hurting anyone, but once that picture leaked his sweet and innocent image was forever tarnished. However, he has rebounded nicely and it has not really been brought up. It appears that Tiger Woods has tried taking the same approach after his cheating scandal. Both Phelps and Woods were America’s sports heroes and never intended to have the media slam them for mistakes they made in their personal lives.
