After the HOF game took Shaun Suisham away from the Steelers, the Steelers looked around free agency before settling on former Cleveland Brown Garrett Hartley. Hartley was set to be the Steelers’ only kicker until Suisham could return, but then Hartley was injured during their preseason game against Buffalo. Instead of trying to find another kicker in free agency, the Steelers decided to trade with Jacksonville to acquire one of their kickers, veteran Josh Scobee.
During his time in Jacksonville, Scobee was effective at making field goals, ending the 2013 season with a 92% field completion record. His percentage moved down slightly in 2014 with Scobee only making 76.8% field goal attempts, but apparently that was good enough for the Steelers then.
Well, it’s not good enough for them now. During their game against Baltimore last night, Scobee made two of 4 field goals and basically cost the Steelers the game while Justin Tucker was kicking field goals left and right to help the Ravens win their first game of the season. Apparently, the Steelers have had enough of Scobee’s low production numbers already and are now in the market for a new kicker.
It has been reported that the Steelers are planning to work out former Washington Redskin, Kai Forbath. Forbath could be a good candidate, depending on what the Steelers are looking for. Forbath was cut by the Redskins during week one after missing a field goal which is exactly what Scobee’s problem is. Nonetheless, if the Steelers can’t find a new kicker, losing Big Ben won’t be their only problem this season.
