While there are rookies that are going to make an impact, there are certainly going to be rookies who end up being disappointments. Some rookies that I predict are going to be disappointments are Dante Fowler Jr, drafted by the Jacksonville Jaguars, Brandon Scherff, drafted by the Washington Redskins, Dorial Green-Beckham, drafted by the Tennessee Titans and Marcus Peters, drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs.
Dante Fowler Jr was set for an excellent career in the NFL. He has the abilities and the body as well as the athleticism. Unfortunately for the Jaguars, the first day of practice, Fowler sustained an ACL injury. The injury is causing him to miss his rookie year which is certainly a disappointment for not only the team but Fowler himself. With Fowler on their roster, the Jaguars were set for possibly making a comeback, but without Fowler, the Jaguars are set back to mediocracy.
When the Redskins drafted Brandon Scherff, many eyebrows rose because it just seemed like such an unusual pick. While Scherff has been compared to the likes of rookie Zack Martin, the Redskins offensive line is nowhere near the Cowboys’ line. While Scherff is a very motivated and a large guy, his abilities and size will mean nothing with a messy offensive line. Along with a messy offensive line, problems surrounding RG3 will only make the offensive line weaker and Scherff will become underutilized.
With all of the publicity going towards Marcus Mariota, Dorial Green-Beckham tends to be overshadowed but with good reason. If Mariota becomes quarterback, Beckham could be one of his go-to guys, but Beckham is very questionable. He does not keep his eyes all over the field and tends to make his job more difficult by not paying attention and making unnecessary scenarios. Instead of running the safest route, Beckham tends to not trust his instincts and it works to the defense’s advantage. One of the biggest drawbacks of Beckham is his character since he had a lot of off-the-field issues including sitting out a season and even arrests. While he has the abilities, his immaturity is his biggest drawback and is already disappointing.
There is no doubt that Marcus Peters has the ability to play in the NFL. He’s a tough and confident player which is going to help beef up Kansas City’s defense. He has eyes all over the field especially in terms of checking up on the quarterback, but Peters has major character issues. First of all, Peters’ confidence can be seen as slightly over-bearing and be more “cocky” since he does not take orders very well. He becomes way too emotionally invested in the game and even threw a tantrum on the sideline of a game. Peters has also been known to get into arguments with coaching staff which ended up with his dismissal. While being emotionally invested in a game can be a good thing, Peters takes it to an extreme and not in a good way. Peters’ immaturity is most certainly going to be his biggest downfall unless the Chiefs are able to get him to straighten up.
