Happy Independence Day everyone! President Barack Obama made his weekly presidential address today which included a special message for the US Men’s National Futbol Team.  The team was recently eliminated from the World Cup after losing to Belgium 2-1 in the knockout round.   In the loss, however, a new American hero, Tim Howard, emerged.

Obama opened his speech by saying, I want to begin today by saying a special word to the U.S. men’s soccer team, who represented America so well the past few weeks. We are so proud of you. You’ve got a lot of new believers.”

He went on to acknowledge the growing number of petitions to make goalkeeper Tim Howard Secretary of Defense.  He commented on the idea saying, “I know there’s actually a petition on the White House website to make Tim Howard the next secretary of defense. Chuck Hagel’s got that spot right now, but if there is a vacancy, I’ll think about it.”

The President also called US captain Clint Dempsey to congratulate he and the team on their amazing effort in Brazil.  This team made all of us feel a new sense of patriotism that we had been lacking for years just in time for Independence Day!
