Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice was indicted on Thursday on a charge of third-degree aggravated assault. The charge stems from a Feb. 15 arrest when Rice allegedly assaulted his fiancée Janay Palmer in the Revel Casino in Atlantic City, N.J.
On Wednesday, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said that the NFL was monitoring Rice’s legal issues. He said that disciplinary action would be taken against Rice for his part in the assault.
But it looks like Rice has more to worry about than a possible NFL suspension. Initially Rice was arrested for a simple assault-domestic violence. The aggravated assault charge could carry a penalty of up to five years in prison for the All-Pro running back.
Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti spoke out Monday supporting Rice but said his arrest was “embarrassing and disappointing.” Both Bisciotti and Ravens head coach John Harbaugh have stood by Rice. The team released a statement Thursday evening saying, “This is part of the due process for Ray. We know there is more to Ray Rice than this one incident.”
