He has long been considered one of the greatest pitchers currently in the league which only made it sadder to learn that it could be all over for Philadelphia pitcher Roy Halladay. The 36-year-old pitching ace has been far from himself this season and earlier this week it was discovered that he would need surgery. He was diagnosed with a partial tear of the rotator cuff and some fraying of the labrum. He is expected to be out at least three months and Halladay would love nothing more than to come back later this season.
However, being realistic, he also knows there is a chance that he may never pitch again. If that is the case, he wanted to let the city of Philadelphia and Phillies fans all around the world that he was grateful for the support and disappointed in the poor performance he gave them this season. Halladay pitched 34.1 innings and had an 8.65 ERA with a 2-4 record. Halladay’s letter goes on to say,
“I’ve been thinking just the last couple of days. I just felt like I should address the fans. I know there is a lot of mixed opinions on pitching, not pitching, all that kind of stuff. I know there are people who are disappointed about how I pitched the last two years. I know there are a lot of people who are very supportive.
“So, one, I just wanted to thank them for their support. And my heart goes out to all of the people who spend all of their money and go out to the games and don’t get to see what they want to see. I know I’m not the whole team. There are still a lot of guys out there and it’s a fun team to watch. But I feel bad that I’m missing the time that I am. I feel bad for the fans that I’m missing the time.
