Roy Hibbert may have just made his biggest mistake thus far in his career. During a post-game interview, Hibbert was asked about defending Lebron James and he answered “no homo”. It was pretty clear Hibbert knew it was a stupid comment or the Pacers front office realized it because he went into damage control immediately. Hibbert reached out to Jason Collins who came out of the closet earlier this year and asked if he could talk to him.
The Pacers center also released a statement through the Pacers website this morning:
I am apologizing for insensitive remarks made during the postgame press conference after our victory over Miami Saturday night. They were disrespectful and offensive and not a reflection of my personal views. I used a slang term that is not appropriate in any setting, private or public, and the language I used definitely has no place in a public forum, especially over live television. I apologize to those who I have offended, to our fans and to the Pacers’ organization. I sincerely have deep regret over my choice of words last night.
While it was a poor choice of words, the talks of a suspension for Game 7 are ludicrous. He did not mean anything against the LGBT community and just got caught using a poor choice of words. While there needs to be a form of discipline for his comment, it should be something monetary. Let him play in the most important game of his life, and make him write a check to a LGBT charity or spend some time with people struggling with their sexual identity.
