It looks like all Oklahoma City Thunder’s fans prayers have been answered. All-Star point guard Russell Westbrook made his return to the court yesterday almost a month ahead of schedule. On April 27th, Westbrook had surgery to repair a torn meniscus he suffered during his second game in the NBA playoffs. He was expected to be out at least three more weeks, meaning at least 20 games. Instead he missed two games this season. In their last game before Westbrook’s return, the Thunder suffered a blow out loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves.
There was some much expected rust at the beginning of the game. However, his explosiveness is clearly there. In the first quarter, Westbrook scored on a driving layup which is the best sign to see. It is always important to see if players coming back from major injuries will be timid in their first few games back. Having Westbrook back, makes this a much better team. It was clear Kevin Durant, despite how talented he is, could not carry this team for too long without his point guard. Durant finished the night with a double double, picking up 33 points and ten rebounds. While, Westbrook had 21 points and seven assists. Despite just playing his first game back off major knee surgery, Westbrook was the first to critique himself and point out his flaws.
“I just missed some easy ones but that will come,” Westbrook said. “I’m able to do what I want. I could be better but that’s all right. That’s expected. I’m not expected to come back and be bionic man. I’m just going to work my way through it.”
Their next game is on Wednesday against the Mavericks.
