The Seattle Seahawks have really grown into one of the most popular teams in the NFL due to their back to back Super Bowl appearances, their huge social media following and of course, now infamous Super Bowl play.

Their players garner a lot of attention and quarterback Russell Wilson is front and center. Wilson is slowly becoming one of the most popular NFL quarterbacks of this decade. In his short but explosive NFL career, Wilson has thrown 72 touchdowns passes, ran 20 touchdowns, has a 98.6 passer rate and has almost 10,000 passing yards. Clearly, this is an impressive feat for anyone and Wilson was looking for the payoff for all of his hard work.

As of the 2015 season, Wilson had a remaining year on his rookie contract. For months, it looked like Wilson and the Seahawks weren’t making any progress on a new contract. It seemed that Wilson would end the 2015-2016 season a free agent, but now Seattle Seahawks fans can breathe a heavy sigh of relief and get a good night’s sleep.

Russell Wilson and the Seahawks have finally met in the middle. Wilson signed a 4-year contract extension, estimated at $87.6 million dollars and a $31 million dollar signing bonus with $60 million guaranteed. Wilson’s contract is one of the most expensive contracts in NFL history, followed up only by Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

Wilson has since released a statement in regards in his new contract, “For me, I just want to be paid based on what I’m worth, what I’ve produced, whatever that means. For me, I just let the play speak for itself,” Wilson said. “That’s not my job to kind of do all that. That’s why I hire (agent) Mark Rodgers, and that’s why I trust him to figure everything out for me, work everything out, and sure enough it did, and I get to play here for another four more years. Couldn’t be much better”.

While Wilson is clearly excited about his contract, Seattle has to be excited too. They get to keep one of the best QBs in the game right now coupled with the fact that they’re getting him in his prime, his uncanny ability to lead the Seahawks into the playoffs and not to mention that their salary cap is benefiting.  Overall, it looks like not passing on Wilson’s deal was actually a good thing this time.
