Sad news for Russian skiier Maria Komissarova today. After going through a training run, Komissarova broke her spine and had to immediately undergo surgery. While, she is unable to compete in Sochi, the six-hour surgery was successful. Doctors explained the injury as a fracture of “the 12th dorsal vertebrae in her lower-middle back.”
Komissarova was injured on a course designed for freestyle skiers who race down a mountain while hitting big-air jumps all while trying to avoid different obstacles. She was injured at the beginning of the course and there is no word on her prognosis or if she will compete again in the future. She remains in serious but stable condition.
