With all of the recent firings going on in the NFL, San Francisco decided to get it on the action too. After only one season, the 49ers have released head coach, Jim Tomsula. Tomsula took over for John Harbaugh, who has found success as Michigan’s head coach. Before Tomsula was promoted to head coach, he worked as their defensive line coach since 2007.

Tomsula’s turn as head coach led to a final record of 5-11 and fourth place in the NFC West. Even their win against the St. Louis Rams today couldn’t help Tomsula. It is still unclear if he will work for the organization in a different capacity. One of the biggest decisions that Tomsula made this season was benching starting quarterback Colin Kaepernick in favor of backup Blaine Gabbert.

The 49ers have released a statement about Tomsula’s firing: “Jimmy has been a valuable member of the 49ers organization for the last nine years…We all know he is a man of high character, and his contributions on the field and in our community have always been greatly appreciated. This entire organization is proud and grateful to have worked so closely alongside Jimmy. We all wish him and his family great success in the future.” 49ers’ CEO Jed York is set to address the media tomorrow and will most likely give an answer on Tomsula’s status with the team.

However, the biggest reaction came from Jim Harbaugh. Harbaugh has been vocal in the past about how he was basically pushed out of San Francisco and that the decision wasn’t as mutual as everyone, though. Regardless of all the details, Harbaugh tweeted something today shortly after Tomsula’s firing which led many to believe it was in reference to it.

There are a lot of coaching vacancies in the league.  We’ll just add the 49ers onto a long list of teams looking for a new head coach in 2016!
