What better way to celebrate International Women’s Day than to welcome back the GOAT to the court. Serena Williams will take the court tonight at Indian Wells for the first time since last January at the Australian Open. Williams was seven weeks pregnant and still won the title. Williams gave birth in September to her beautiful daughter Alexis Olympia and got married a short time after that.
She recently revealed that after giving birth she suffered from very serious blood clots in her lungs that required several surgeries and kept her bed ridden for weeks. Luckily, she is doing much better and ready to return to competition. She has played in some games publicly, including an exhibition game in Abu Dhabi as well as the “Tie Breaks Ten” event at Madison Square Garden. She won a couple matches and looked like she was almost back to top form.
Tonight she will face Zarina Diyas, a 24-year-old ranked number 53 in the world. To give her some extra encouragement, her husband Alexis bought four billboards on the route she took to Indian Wells that featured their baby girl and the acronym G.M.O.A.T., which stands for greatest mother of all time. Williams admitted that since having Olympia her priorities have changed despite wanting to be back on the court.
She told ET, “Working motherhood is real. It’s so real. But I have my priorities and Olympia is that. . . But I’m never a day without Olympia. She’s my priority and everyday I need to be home with her. I don’t wanna miss any moments with her.”
