When it comes to women’s tennis, does it get any better than Serena Williams? Nope! Williams faced of against her good friend Caroline Wozniacki in the women’s final at the US Open. This is Williams’ third straight US Open win as well as her 18th Grand Slam singles title.
“It is a pleasure for me to win my first Grand Slam here and then this No. 18. So I’m really emotional. I couldn’t ask to do it at a better place,” Williams said. Wozniacki proved no match for Williams as she lost 6-3, 6-3 in a succinct 75 minute match.
The win will net Williams an impressive $4 million. She receives a one million dollar bonus for having the best results this past summer.
Wozniacki took the loss in stride saying to her friend, “You really deserved it today. You played better than me. You’re an unbelievable champion and you’re an inspiration to me, both on and off the court. You’re an unbelievable friend — and you definitely owe drinks later.”
It is great to see these two competitors not let competition ruin their friendship. Williams joked later that she needs to get in shape because Wozniacki will be winning in the near future!
