She has done it again! Serena Williams defeated Angelique Gerber 7-5, 6-3 in straight sets to win her seventh Wimbledon title and 22nd Grand Slam title Saturday. This win ties Steffi Graff’s Open era major title record and leaves Williams only two wins from tying Margaret Courts’ all-time record of 24.
The No. 1 Williams had not won a Grand Slam title since Wimbledon last year, losing in the American Open semifinals and the French Open finals. She previously lost to Gerber at the Australian Open finals in January. “I love playing her,” Williams said. “She’s such a great opponent. She brings out great tennis in me.” Gerber had not lost a set at the tournament until she faced Williams.
Williams served 13 aces in a competitive match against the fourth-seeded German. After her game-winning forehand at the net, she collapsed on the grass, lying on her back, taking it all in. “It makes the victory even sweeter to know how hard I worked for it,” Williams noted. Williams will compete again today at Wimbledon for her 14th Grand Slam doubles title with her sister, Venus, in the women’s doubles final against Timea Babos/ Yaroslava Shvedova.
