After filling in at the Edmonton Oilers’ practice, Shannon Szabados has officially signed with a men’s pro team. She becomes the first women ever signed by a men’s professional hockey team. She is no stranger to winning on the ice, however. In fact, she was part of the Canadian women’s hockey team who just won gold in Sochi. She announced the very exciting news on her Twitter page:
Szabados signed a contract with the Souther Professional Hockey League’s Colombus Cottonmouths. Head coach Jerome Bechard said, “I am very excited to get a world class athlete that has competed and has faced, high pressured situations. Shannon has won at every level she has played, in women’s hockey or men’s hockey”.
She was also the first female to play in the Western Hockey League. The Cottonmouths’ next game is March 13th and a press conference introducing Szabados is expected before the game.
Basically, Shannon Szabados is one badass chick!
