There are certain women in the sports world who don’t get enough attention and one of the biggest is the players’ wives. Most of them are just cast off as the women behind the men, never daring to speak up against their husband’s team or anything about their husband really, but then there’s Miko Grimes. She is a different type of “WAG” and it shows by how much she really stands out in comparison to everyone else. That is why she is this week’s SportsAsToldByAGirl spotlight.
For those who don’t know, Miko is married to Dolphins CB Brent Grimes who is cited as being one of the best cornerbacks in the game. She is also a radio host on Miami Sports Radio 560-WQAM. Brent wouldn’t be where he is without Miko though because she’s his playmaker. While, in most sports marriages, the woman is seen as the one who follows her husband, the Grimes’ are the other way around. As someone who gets an inside look at the NFL, she is not afraid to tell Brent or the rest of the world exactly what she thinks. Also according to BleacherReport, she helps Brent out on the sidelines to make him an even better player and let’s just say Miko’s teachings are really working.
As someone who is not technically affiliated with the NFL, she is not afraid to call them out on their crap which is pretty brave. She is not afraid to put anybody or everybody on blast and never too quick to throw someone under the bus. The only thing that makes her different than anyone else is that she does it publicly, mostly on her twitter and she is a pretty active Instagram user too. Her most publicized rant about the NFL was at the end of January when Brent was invited to the Pro Bowl, but the tweets really speak for themselves.
She warned her followers of the impending rant before starting off: “For those of u that dont know, i had emergency oral surgery on Thursday. My husband was concerned for me, so he asked coach Garrett if he could miss practice to be there for me bcuz i was stressed and in a lot of pain. Coach Garrett and NFL exec excused him from practice to be there for me. Well… Apparently, the right hand of the @nfl didnt tell the left hand he wouldnt be there that day, so they yanked his paid appearances & are not happy with him. What kind of message does that send to the players? Do they think they are above family?” That is just the majority of Miko’s rant which ended up being a lot of tweets, but the ones above really sum what she’s trying to accomplish. While, she does understand that the players have to be there because it’s their job….she also points out that family should come before anything which is the motto for most people. As inclusive as the NFL claims to be, it’s hard to ignore someone who is actually calling the NFL’s shortcomings instead of ignoring that they’re even there.
The scariest thing for the NFL though has to be that they can’t control what Miko does even if her husband works for them. They can’t ban her media privileges and they certainly can’t force Brent to do it either. One thing that the NFL should really worry about is concussions because Miko has voiced her disagreement with the NFL on their concussion policy and how many players will play regardless.
With all of the hatred that Miko has received from Dolphins fans, she still refuses to change who she is and that’s why she’s such an important woman to pay attention to. Her presence and opposition of the NFL is refreshing and necessary in a world where the wives of players ignore the risk for the sake of their husbands. Miko Grimes is a new type of NFL wife who should be represented more positively and her unwillingness to give up is why she deserves that positive attention instead of negative.
