Colin Kaepernick’s protest has taken the world by storm; what started in the preseason has evolved into a huge media storm, and one that won’t be going away anytime soon in the wake of recent and historical events that have taken place in America. One thing that the media hasn’t really addressed, besides with Megan Rapinoe and WNBA teams, was if the protest will carry into other male sports because there’s a lot of male sports teams who could follow Kaepernick’s lead.
Easily, one of the most popular teams in the NBA is the Golden State Warriors.
We’ve heard Stephen Curry speak out in support of Kaepernick, as well as Kevin Durant, and now so has Warriors head coach, Steve Kerr. When Kerr was asked about Kaepernick protest, he had a lot to say.
“It’s probably one of the best things to come out of the Kaepernick issue is that people are talking, and that’s a good thing…It doesn’t matter what side you’re on on the Kaepernick stuff, you better be disgusted about the things that are happening. I understand people who are offended by his stance. Maybe they have a military family member who is offended. Maybe they lost somebody in a war and that flag or the anthem means a lot more to them than someone else. But then you flip it around, and what about non-violent protests? That’s America. This is what our country is about. It’s a non-violent protest. That’s what it should be about.”
Kerr also noted that he’s been talking to members of the Warriors about protesting this upcoming season. He said that he will stand behind whatever his players decide to do as long as it is non-violent. I find it very admirable that Steve Kerr is speaking up about these issues instead of ignoring them like most coaches have been doing. Hopefully, other coaches will follow Kerr’s lead especially in the NBA where players have been vocal in the past about Black Lives Matter.
