Some thought he could be the first pick in this year’s NFL draft. Others thought Louisville’s schedule was misleading people to believe quarterback Teddy Bridgewater was the top quarterback in the draft. His Pro Day did not go as well as it could have, leading NFL scouts to assume Bridgewater was overrated.
Now, ESPN’s Chris Mortensen is reporting that a team who had a private workout with the quarterback described his performance as “shaky”. Scouts say that Bridgewater’s small hands are of concern. Hand size, however, is not a complete turnoff as current quarterback Aaron Rodgers was also described to have small hands and he is a top quarterback in the league.
This negative talk could actually be a team trying to see if Bridgewater’s draft stock would fall. Teams have been known to point out problems with a player as a way for that player to be passed up on by team’s with high draft picks. Lots of teams have problems at the quarterback position, but do not have a top ten draft pick, for example the Cincinnati Bengals.
Bridgewater’s agent, Kennard McGuire, has denied Mortensen’s report about his client’s private workout not going well. He said, “While I am certain this statement wasn’t intended to be misleading, it is my duty to remove and eliminate any doubt. Teddy has visited multiple teams with more workouts and visits coming in the near future. The assessment we received from the one workout was ‘simply amazing and sharp,’ and we expect nothing short or less than stellar in the upcoming workouts in the very near future.”
McGuire goes on to say Bridgewater has another private workout today. Of course, McGuire is going to defend his client. He has a lot of money riding on where Bridgewater gets drafted. Whether Mortensen’s report is accurate or not, none of us will ever know because none of us were there. However, we have seen this guy play and he can definitely play. Regardless of Louisville’s strength of schedule, Bridgewater impressed with his accuracy and arm strength throughout the season.
