The Houston Texans have a little bit more than a quarterback “competition” and it shows with their inability to be able to keep a solid starting QB. After picking up Brian Hoyer from the Brown last year, it looked like he would end up being the starter and he was week one. It quickly switched back to Ryan Mallett and after an almost blowout loss to the Falcons, Hoyer came back in and redeemed the team. Head coach Bill O’Brien wasn’t impressed though, so he has decided to stay with Ryan Mallett. The real question is whether O’Brien’s decision was the best for the team or not.
While it’s harder to judge than someone involved with the team, as an avid watcher of “Hard Knocks“, we were able to witness both of their abilities throughout the show. Hoyer was cited for his consistency and won the starting job, but then came his first game. His performance was terrible to say the least and he was inevitably benched for Mallett. As horrible as this may sound, Mallett is really the best of a bad situation for the Texans. If “Hard Knocks” proved anything, it’s that Mallett shouldn’t be the starter for the Texans, because he couldn’t even show up to practice on time.
The return of Arian Foster could help make the decision somewhat easier, it brings up the question if Houston should just pick up a completely different quarterback to finish out the season. Right now, the Texans are 1-3, leaving them third in the AFC South division, just above the Jaguars who have the same record. With their division match against the Colts coming up on Thursday, Mallett is set to start but if it’s anything like last game, Hoyer will inevitably end up replacing him at some point. The Texans have the pieces for a good offense if they could just get a solid quarterback instead of trying to flip flop between Mallett and Hoyer.
