The Houston Texans are a conundrum that doesn’t really get the attention they deserve because it’s interesting to think about how the Texans have all the pieces of a good team, but when they finally come together, nothing seems to work out. Take their quarterback situation, it was a toss-up during most of the summer before QB Brian Hoyer ended up getting the starting job. After his first game as the starter, Hoyer was inevitably replaced by backup QB Ryan Mallett. Every week really became a game to see who HC Bill O’Brien would choose to start each week, but now it looks like the final decision has been made.
It has been reported by multiple sources that Ryan Mallett has been cut from the Texans. Mallett came out of the University of Arkansas and was drafted by the New England Patriots in the third round of the 2011 draft. Mallett would eventually end up with the Texans in 2014 for a draft pick and took the place of current Jets QB Ryan Fitzpatrick before an injury ended his 2014 season with the Texans. However, most of the trouble for Mallett started before the 2015 season due to the quarterback competition between Hoyer and himself.
After Hoyer was named the starter over Mallett, he showed up to practice late the next day. Mallett claimed that he had “overslept” and the whole situation was broadcasted and showcased on reality show ‘Hard Knocks‘. The first time that Mallett was late, it was just for practice but this weekend when the team was due to fly to Florida to play the Miami Dolphins, Mallett missed the team’s flight. Mallett claimed that he “was stuck in traffic”, but had to take a commercial flight down to be with the team which to no surprise did not sit right with O’Brien.
The constant lack of maturity has to be the main reason why Mallett won’t be returning and obviously his repeated lateness isn’t going to make teams want to sign him either. The Texans have wasted no time in finding a replacement for Mallett and are looking to sign one of their former QBs, T.J. Yates. Yates played for the Texans from 2011-2013 before spending a year with the Falcons in 2014. While Yates is getting another chance at his job, it looks like all the chances for Mallett are running out.
