It’s been almost a month since Colin Kaepernick worked out in front of NFL scouts. Since then, teams have moved on and chosen not to call him for a real tryout. There’s no mention of it anymore. It just happened and every NFL team continued with their regularly scheduled programming.
Someone did walk away from that workout with a job, however. One of Kaepernick’s receivers Jordan Veasy did get a call. The Washington Redskins sign Veasy to their practice squad. He had previously spent time on the Buffalo Bills practice squad before being released in October. The clip below shows Kaepernick’s deep ball completion to Veasy.
In the weeks since Kaepernick’s November 16th workout in front of scouts representing seven NFL teams, not one has meet with him. Not one team brought him in for a real workout. Not one team even pretended to be interested in signing the quarterback. Kaepernick’s team sent video to the other teams not in attendance. They also weren’t interested.
The only thing that changed is the public perception of the NFL’s role in this situation. By holding this publicity stunt and pretending like it’s a real workout, the NFL has absolved itself from being the bad guy. The blame has now been shifted to the team owners and Kaepernick himself for moving the workout. Either way Roger Goodell gets to walk around and feel like he handled the situation correctly. Goodell feels like the situation has been handled and he did everything he can to help get him back in the League.
There have been tons of injuries to quarterbacks this season, yet not one team even picked up the phone to see about a tryout. It seems like this could be the last chance for Kaepernick to play again. It’s hard to imagine a team picks up the phone next season and gives him a call. This publicity stunt framed as a workout gave cover to all of the owners who he just settled with over a collusion lawsuit that was keeping him out of the League. While the details are confidential, we do know the NFL agreed to pay Kaepernick and Panthers’ safety Eric Reid.
Colin Kaepernick has not played a down in the National Football League in three years. He is still in great shape and looks like he would be ready to start for a team as soon as he is signed.
