There my boyfriend and I were, sitting in a bar on a Friday night doing what else – talking about sports. He’s majorly into baseball, and he brought up an excellent point during his ramblings; the San Francisco Giants love even-numbered years.
Why, might you ask? Well let’s flash quickly back to the 2011-12 season, in which the Giants took on the Detroit Tigers in the World Series, and went home with the hardware. Think back a little harder to the 2009-10 season. That year, the Giants bested the Texas Rangers, winning their first World Series title since 1954, and the first win since the team relocated to San Francisco from New York in 1958.
And people think it’s rough being a New York Ranger fan. At least we only had to wait 54 years to watch our team win another title. Giants fans waited 56. Talk about being fans through thick and thin.
Here we are, quickly approaching the end of the 2014 postseason, and what would you know? The San Francisco Giants have made it to the World Series once again. This year they’ll be facing the Kansas City Royals, who are pinning to win their first title since 1985. Is this evenly numbered year magic going to continue for the Giants and bring them to another World Series title? I guess we’ll have to wait and see.
The Giants finished the season holding down the second place spot in the National League Division standings, with a total of 88 wins and 76 losses. The Royals, meanwhile, finished second in the American League Central Division, only one game behind first place Detroit Tigers. The Royals clocked out of the regular season with a total of 89 wins and 73 losses.
Personally who am I going to be rooting for? Kansas City, I love nothing more than watching teams who haven’t won in what seems like forever winning again. That might just be the Ranger fan in me, though.
