There is only one spot left in the playoffs and it belongs to either the Detroit Tigers or the Oakland A’s. Whoever wins tonight moves on to the ALCS to play against the Boston Red Sox. Tonight, it is Justin Verlander going against Sonny Gray for the second time this series. Neither gave up a run in the start meaning we could be in store for another great pitching duel. Verlander currently has a 22 postseason game record of not surrendering a run.
It is quite fitting that Verlander will pitch in the biggest game this season for the Tigers, as he was knocked from the postseason opener by 21-game winner Max Scherzer. Verlander has not been as dominant as he was last year, but he is one pitcher who knows how to pitch in the postseason. The A’s are aware of his greatness, but also know he is vulnerable.
Both of these teams know what is on the line and what it means to lose tonight. They will both come out looking to score early and in that event I give the nod to the Detroit Tigers winning. Their lineup is one of the most intimidating in all of baseball, especially for a young pitcher with so much pressure on his back. I think the Tigers will be on their way to Boston after this game.
