The Dallas Cowboys are off to a hot start after their season-opening loss to the New York Giants. Some credit goes to the o-line, improved defensive plays, Ezekiel Elliott but a lot of the credit has to go to rookie quarterback Dak Prescott. Prescott has given the team confidence when all hope seemed lost and is edging Tony Romo out of his job, it seems. The only question is if Tony Romo should start to be worried about his starting job?
The Dallas Cowboys are currently 3-1 and second in their division, no thanks to Tony Romo. Romo was injured in a preseason game and will be out for at least a few more weeks. The team is faring well with Prescott and there’s a lot Prescott can bring to the table which is where we will start.
Prescott has yet to throw an interception, one problem that lingers around Romo. He is able to get out of the pocket and actually run around the field, something Romo can’t really do either. Prescott has shown he’s confident especially in the face of adversity. He even helped the team come back in the second quarter and tie the game against the San Francisco 49ers and never trail again. What I love so much about Prescott is how humble he is, I’m not saying Romo isn’t but he knows his position on the team and what he’s there to do. He is also the best backup Dallas has had in the past two years so he has definitely earned his roster spot.
As much as I love the Dallas Cowboys and Tony Romo, Romo has been on a slow decline. He has a huge tendency to get injured which is something that doesn’t fare well in the league. He doesn’t always make the best decisions when looking for a target and has thrown almost half as many interceptions as touchdowns. He also doesn’t have the body or option to really be a mobile quarterback which is why the team has relied heavily on the run.
I’m not trying to rip Tony Romo because I love the guy. He’s a great quarterback but so is Dak Prescott. Jerry Jones spoke about this topic, “Tony is our No. 1 quarterback. We’re going to have the luxury of being able to, I think, see them both.” To answer my own question, Tony Romo should not worry about job security for now. He will more than likely get the starting job back this season when he is healthy. Prescott, on the other hand, is a really great quarterback and still has time to develop.
If Romo botches Prescott’s hot start, then maybe he might have to worry about job security. For now, I’d say Romo is safe if he can keep the interceptions at bay and not get injured again. If not, then it’s Dak to the future!
