Almost two months after running over fellow driver Kevin Ward Jr., Tony Stewart will not be charged. A grand jury reviewed all of the evidence and decided not to charge Stewart of any crime. Stewart ran over Ward Jr. when Ward exited his vehicle to confront Stewart after he crashed into his car. While walking on the dark track, he was struck by Stewart’s car and was pronounced dead hours later at a local hospital. The official cause of death was blunt force trauma.
The grand jury felt Ward has stepped towards the car and that is what helped them in their decision. Toxicology reports noted Ward Jr. had marijuana in his system. Personally, I do not believe that is what caused him to exit his vehicle. Of course, you should never drive under the influence of any drug. Stewart said the incident will affect him for the rest of his life. He bowed out of races in the wake of Ward’s death.
