Before I start my review, I would just like to say that there will be no spoilers. So if you have not seen Trainwreck, don’t worry!
Before I get into the sports part of the movie, I’ll give a brief review of everything except for the sports! The movie stars Amy Schumer who also wrote the film along with Bill Hader, Lebron James, Brie Larson, and Colin Quinn and is directed by Judd Apatow. At first, the movie starts off as a typical romantic comedy with some drama, but the movie takes the normal idea of a romcom and flips it on its head. The protagonist also helps break the stereotype of typical female roles in movies and shows a pretty accurate representation of how dating/relationships work these days. Honestly, the movie is refreshing for the genre that it’s in and has a lot of sports for a movie that is mostly geared towards women.
The sports in this movie are awesome, especially Lebron James. From the trailer, it looked like Lebron was going to rarely make an appearance, but that was not true. Lebron played an extremely important role in the film as Bill Hader’s best friend and their chemistry feels so organic and real. He plays a ridiculous version of himself who bugs Bill Hader to watch Downton Abbey, quotes Kayne West, argues over who pays the check and brings up Cleveland any chance he gets. If there was any doubt of his acting chops, this role should keep those to a minimum and holy cow is Lebron James funny! The way that he and Bill and at times he and Amy play off each other is hilarious, but he can also play a more heartfelt role too. The movie honestly wouldn’t be the same without the addition of Lebron.
Of course, Lebron isn’t the only athlete to make an appearance. John Cena also has a pretty big role at the beginning of the movie. Unlike Lebron, he doesn’t play himself but plays a more stereotypical meathead which seems typical. However, Cena brings a certain charisma and sense of humor that adds an extra layer to him as a character and the fact that most of his lines are improv really speaks volumes.
The movie also has a handful of cameos such as Tony Romo which was the biggest surprise of them all along with Marv Albert, Amar’e Stoudemire, Matthew Broderick and Chris Evert. As far as cameos, Romo ends up being the least exciting (did I just say that?), but the rest of the cameos mentioned above are all pretty hilarious, especially Chris Evert in the few lines that she has.
I have to give one fair warning for sports fans before viewing. At the beginning of the movie, Amy has a very negative opinion on sports and its fans which were annoying to say the very least and will probably make you at least vaguely annoyed. Besides that one annoyance, I can’t really complain all that much about Trainwreck. I give the movie an A and recommend it to sports fans and non-sports fan as well.
