The United States Women’s National Soccer Team begins its quest tonight for its second straight gold medal. The U.S. will start pool play in Group G, facing New Zealand tonight, two days before the Opening Ceremony.
They will play:
• Aug. 3 against New Zealand at 6 p.m. ET
• Aug. 6 against France at 4 p.m. ET
• Aug. 9 against Colombia at 6 p.m. ET
The USA played both France and Colombia in the 2012 Olympics, defeating both teams before winning the gold medal. In the FIFA Women’s World Rankings, France ranks thirrd, New Zealand ranks 16th and Colombia is 24th. The Americans are the top-ranked team in the world and they should win the group. The United States has an all-time record of 32-2 against the other teams in Group G.
If the U.S. wins the group, it would face the third place team from either Group E or F. If the U.S. is second in the group, it would play the first-place team from Group F. Finishing third could lead to a match against the first-place team from Group E.
