So you thought your $5,000 raise at work today was a big deal? Leave it to Detroit Tigers ace Justin Verlander to top that. The ace has just got a five year extension on his contract which already had two years left for $180 million! The extension includes an eighth year option that would make the total value of the contract $202 million. If that doesn’t make you feel broke, he is not only the second highest paid player on the Tigers! First baseman Prince Fielder signed a ten year/$214 million contract last season.
When the news broke about Verlander signing the extension, he sent out a message to the city of Detroit and all Tigers’ fans via Twitter. “I love this city & the fans — couldn’t be more excited to spend my career here! We’re going to bring a World Series to Detroit!!!” So he is one of the best pitchers in baseball, possibly dating Kate Upton, and now has more money than he knows what to do with. Jealous yet?
