After Wes Welker lost his job with the Broncos last year, everyone seemed content to assume that he would slip into retirement. Apparently Welker didn’t feel the same way and has signed a 1-year contract with the St. Louis Rams. The question that seems to be on most NFL fans minds is what the heck is Wes Welker thinking and should he be out on the field?

The first question is completely legitimate, because of his extreme history with injury. For those who don’t know, since the beginning of Welker’s career, he has sustained many concussions. While some believe that Welker has suffered eight, some believe that he could have suffered at least ten or possibly more without even knowing it. Even though Welker is living his dream of playing professional football, the cost seems much higher than Welker realizes or even the St. Louis Rams. Even though Welker claims that he’s fine and that he hasn’t had a head injury since last year, it was certainly enough to worry teams and might have been the reason why no one signed him. Fans are also worried when they probably don’t even know half of the stories that Welker could tell.

The second question is more than just a question that fans have been asking, but one that everyone has been asking since the Rams signed Welker. If the NFL wasn’t already in enough trouble over injuries, adding a guy who has one of the worst histories of concussions isn’t going to help either. If Welker suffers another concussion, the NFL could be signing their own death certificate. That’s not even mentioning that the new movie, “Concussion” centered around the NFL and the discovery of CTE that is set to hit theaters this Christmas. If there’s one thing the NFL doesn’t want the world to see, it’s their horrible track record in terms of head injuries and was probably the fuel for some of the reason why Sydney Seau was not allowed to speak at first.

Unfortunately, though, there’s nothing anyone can do now. If Welker wants to play football, he is legally able to and nothing and nobody will be able to stop him unless he’s so far behind that the Rams drop him. However, that seems very unlikely. Regardless, Welker’s return should be a wake-up call for everyone.
