The Oklahoma City Thunder were missing something. Nobody could quite put their finger on it, but they think that piece is veteran point guard Derek Fisher. Fisher is a five time champion, but is now 38 years old. He will most likely be Russell Westbrook’s back up after the Thunder traded away Eric Maynor to the Trail Blazers. However, it is less about what he offers on the court and more about what he can offer behind closed doors.
Westbrook is an extremely athletic individual who can make great plays. However, when things don’t go his way, he has been known to express his emotions in a very public way. Recently he had a meltdown when teammate Thabo Sefalosha did not follow the play he set up correctly. This was while they were already up by 20 points.
Fisher can be a voice of reason for Westbrook. A leader that can show the young point guard how to control his emotions. Fisher has played with big egos, Kobe Bryant, and knows how to play with them. This is a good move for the Thunder and especially Russell Westbrook. However, does it put them in a better place to win a championship? I am not fully sold on that idea. If he does come down to a rematch of last year, the Heat are just too talented and dominant for the Thunder. Durant can handle Lebron James decently, but then you have Dwyane Wade who seems to be fully healthy again. Also, a lot of people are underrating the San Antonio Spurs who have played great all year and have a potential MVP in Tony Parker.
