If I told you a month ago that the Yankees were making a run at the playoffs, you would have believed me; now things have significantly changed. The team was just swept by the Boston Red Sox this past weekend at Fenway Park and currently sit six games back of the second American League Wild Card spot. After a seven game winning streak, and having been just one game back only a week and a half ago, no one expected the club to falter the way they did.
Young stud Gary Sanchez is still swinging a hot bat, having blasted a couple home runs in the team’s weekend series against the Boston Red Sox, as well as new designated hitter Billy Butler making a name with the club, however the team is still struggling. Both 2B Starlin Castro and CF Jacoby Ellsbury were injured in Saturday’s game with a hamstring injury and bone bruise, respectively.
The team has thirteen games left, starting a series against the last place Rays on Tuesday night in Tampa Bay. If they really want to make the playoffs and make a case for themselves, sweeping the Rays would be a good start or they can say goodbye to winning their 28th World Series this playoffs.
