It seems to all be falling apart for a guy who was once considered the greatest played in baseball. Alex Rodriguez faces 100 game suspension after being connected to Biogenesis. Owner of Biogenesis, Tony Bosch, reached an agreement with MLB to divulge names of those involved in received PEDs. This could be the biggest drug scandal in professional sports. Rodriguez, along with nineteen other players, were named by Bosch. Rodriguez has not played a game this season after undergoing hip surgery in the offseason. The 37-year-old had planned on making a return to baseball after the All-Star Break, but should he?
Rodriguez’s legacy has been permanently scarred and there is no way he will ever be remembered as an elite player. He will always be linked to scandal and cheating. Rodriguez’s production has also gone down which makes him less of an appealing player and not worth the baggage. Rodriguez has not played in a full season since 2007 and his numbers have drastically fallen off since then.
Rodriguez has been involved in scandal before. Back in 2009 Rodriguez admitted that while playing in Texas he also used banned substances. Rodriguez admitted to ESPN, “When I arrived in Texas in 2001, I felt an enormous amount of pressure. I felt like I had all the weight of the world on top of me and I needed to perform, and perform at a high level every day.” He also vowed that since his trade to New York that he was completely clean. However, he may have deceived us for a second time.
Rodriguez needs to step away from baseball. There is nothing left in his career and he will never get another chance to clear his name. The first scandal is something that fans can overlook, but knowing he did continued to use them makes his career a sham. There is no place in professional sports for someone who continues to think they can get away with cheating. Rodriguez is a shell of his former self and his performance alone should force him into retirement. The Yankees will have to eat his outrageous contract and just admit they made a mistake. Rodriguez has no future in baseball. He is representing everything that professional sports should be against.
