SAN ANTONIO- This year, San Antonio was able to get their hands on what they finally wanted- a professional football team. Our city loves football and many football lovers in the area have no problem traveling to Dallas to catch the Cowboys game, or road tripping to Houston to see a Texans game, but have yet to attend the Alamodome to support San Antonio’s very own professional football team. What are they waiting for? If you are reading this article and are an AAF skeptic, this list is for you.
Here is why you MUST attend a San Antonio Commanders game:
1.The Alamodome has worked out its kinks– During the series kickoff between the Commanders vs San Diego Fleet, a lot of fans were disappointed on how the Alamodome staff handled the flow during the game. Extended security lines, delayed ticket lines, high meal prices, and long concession lines were among the various complaints made by AAF attendees.
Since then, the Alamodome has issued an apology and they have followed through. The lines are much shorter now, more concession stands are available, additional beer runners have been added to the stands, and some alcohol prices have dropped by a few dollars. The Alamodome staff is very friendly and knowledgeable as well.
During my recent visit, I got lost trying to find the East entrance, and one of the staff members went above and beyond to ensure I found the correct spot. They also had effective communication with other members of the staff to ensure I was able to get to the spot I was looking for. It appears they have turned over a new leaf, so you should have no problem with being able to attend a Commanders game and getting the full football experience you deserve.
2. The crowd has a magnetic energy- The San Antonio Commanders easily have the largest fan base in the AAF. Since the kickoff game, Commanders attendance at home has increased by roughly 9%.
The most recent crowd drew a record breaking AAF attendance record with 30,345 attendees. This brings the average attendance at the Alamodome for the past three games to 29,126.
To put that into perspective, the total average for all other teams combined is 13,611. That means that the crowd in San Antonio averages over double all other AAF teams, so it is no secret that San Antonio has a magnetic crowd (Is San Antonio ready for an NFL team, anyone?).
The city is passionate about their team, and the loud cheers for the Commanders have an indescribable draw. As an attendee, it would be hard for you not to enjoy the experience and chant loudly with a beer in your hand while helping the crowd complete a full circle wave around the arena. The crowd itself is an enticement to attend a game. Besides, who doesn’t want to be a part of history anyway? Â
3. The talent is there- The Commanders have won four straight games. Their current record is 5-2, so the probability that you will attend a winning game is decent.
Plus, the AAF is a little less strict than the NFL when it comes to defensive plays, so you will see a lot more brutal action on the field, reminiscent of the old NFL before tons of regulations were set in place for the safety of the players. The more brutal approach to defense is a lot more fun to watch, and the Commanders have a strong defense who are able to read schemes and close on plays.
This past game, their LCB and RCB did a great job at obtaining picks and sealing their winning fate against the Salt Lake Stallions. Also, the AAF just committed the highly media-covered Johnny Manziel to the Memphis Express, who play in San Antonio on April 6th, so you can see talent on both sides of the ball. The majority of the AAF roster consists of former college football players, former NFL players, and you might see an NFL talent scout or two on the field looking for the next player to add to their roster.
If you want to see a great football game, visiting the Commanders at the Alamodome is the way to go. Not only will this game allow you to get your football fix before the NFL preseason game, but it is a fun experience for people of all ages.
Not to mention, San Antonio has been flirting with the idea of obtaining their own NFL team for quite some time. With your support and attendance, our city has a strong case to make for themselves when we have an opportunity to obtain an NFL team of our own.
