Being a professional athlete is no walk in the park, but I’m sure reigning WNBA MVP Elena Delle Donne can finally breathe a sigh of relief. Donne publicly came out and announced that she is engaged to her partner Amanda Clifton during an interview with Vogue Magazine.
“It was just one of those articles where they came into my home, spent a couple days with me and [fiancee] Amanda [Clifton] is a huge part of my life. So to leave her out wouldn’t have made any sense. It’s not a coming out article or anything. I’ve been with her for a very long time now and people who are close to me know that and that’s that.” Donne told reporters after she was questioned in Rio.
Reportedly, the couple has been engaged since June 2nd. Donne also confirmed that her relationship was known by her Chicago Sky teammates and Clifton is often by her side. It’s not like Donne and Clifton are trying to hide their relationship. The couple has previously posted pictures together but didn’t hint or even mention that they were dating much less in a serious relationship.
However, Donne’s point for waiting is something that a lot of celebrities and high-profile athletes do. She was worried about her partner’s privacy which is a legitimate concern. While Clifton only has around 3,000 followers now, that number could double or quadruple by tomorrow since the release of the news. Despite their relationship now being public, Donne stressed that their relationship is still going to be extremely private.
Donne picked a perfect time to publicize her relationship too. With the Olympics literally two days away, the world will be a little more focused on the women’s basketball team instead of focusing on her relationship. Best of luck and congratulations to Elena and Amanda on their engagement and impending nuptials!
